A staff training exercise being run by the bus operator Stagecoach sparked a bomb scare in Cheltenham last Friday, police have revealed.Several roads were sealed off and a controlled explosion was carried out on a suspicious package found on a bus in the town’s High Street.
Stagecoach said the package had been used to illustrate security procedures, and apologised.
Police said they were not aware of the exercise taking place.
…In a statement Stagecoach said that during the training a package was used on the bus to illustrate security issues.
The bus was then required at short notice to operate on a service, it said.
“Unfortunately, the package had not been removed from the vehicle before entering service and was later identified as suspicious by one of our passengers as the bus travelled along Cheltenham High Street.”
