Q: How many laughing policemen does it take to kill an innocent bystander?

Police stand by after officer assaults Ian Tomlinson

In the Guardian video it is clear that at least three officers – other than the one who actually assaults Ian Tomlinson – appear to be looking directly at the events unfolding before them.

As Ian Tomlinson lies on the ground (see picture above) he appears to be talking to the police officers in the picture above. One of them seems to be a FIT officer. The FIT officer seems to kick or prod Ian Tomlinson with his foot before walking back behind the other police officers.

How many of these police officers freely volunteered any information about the circumstances of Mr Tomlinson’s death? How many of them will pay for his death? Who will be held to account for the lies and half-truths put out by the police?

PS

An anonymous commenter on an early blog post made the following remarks:

You’ll also notice that the officers pictured here: http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Guardian/Pix/pictures/2009/4/6/1239007647655/Ian-Tomlinson-lies-on-the-001.jpg

bare a resemblance to the officers here:

Those pictures are:

I’m not sure it’s possible to say with certainty that anonymous is right or wrong.

  1. The shields, the shields.

One office with the black ‘T’ of the arm bit of the shield and two officers with the full black cover on their’s.

Also the same combination of degrees of face visibility

  2. They are the only people who can committ murder and get away with it

  3. Wouldn’t it be great if the police were required to display their name of badge in a prominent place so that any photos or video would show who was who. So long as their individual identities are hidden you can’t expect responsible behaviour.

  4. I can see that there are definitely similarities there, I’m just not sure that there is anything conclusive, especially given the lo-res B&W picture. Have you come across any other pictures of that group of coppers that is clearer?

  5. Wouldn’t it be great if the police didn’t do reprehensible things in the first place, and didn’t cover for their colleagues if they did…

  6. Very disturbing to see this footage and these images. I have posted about this too here.

  7. which police officer [s] will be identified?
    which one[s] will be prosecuted?
which Jury will go on to hear irrefutable evidence of his/her guilt and then go on to find that person[s] “not guilty”?
what “lessons” will be learnt (until the next time)?

  8. IMAGINE THAT WAS A GANG OF YOB’S, HOW INTERESTED WOULD THE POLICE BE THEN? SCUM IS ALL I CAN SAY AND MY THOUGHTS ARE WITH MR TOMLINSONS FAMILY – HOPEFULLY JUSTICE WILL BE DONE – ALTHOUGH ITS A LONG SHOT!
